Traveling through Portugal was a breeze, with the exception of getting from Coimbra to Conimbriga (which did not turn out too difficult but it was not the most obvious to us). Because we searched and failed to find useful references on how to get from downtown Coimbra to Conimbriga, I decided to document that here.
Conimbriga is the site of ancient Roman ruins that would make for a great half day trip from Coimbra. You can do a full day and tackle one of their long trails there but we did not have enough time. We took the earliest bus in the morning, spent a few hours wandering through the ruins and their small on-site museum, and returned on the early afternoon bus. Bus Service & Times
We took the 9AM bus from the bus stop in downtown Coimbra (highlighted in purple in the first row) and took the 1PM-ish bus back from Conimbriga (highlighted in purple in the second row). Pay close attention to the letters on the bottom as you will be taking those with the letter "C" which indicate that the bus route starts and ends in Conimbriga.
Bus Stop Location
There is a bus from downtown Coimbra, with a bus stop right outside of the main train station by the water. There are three side by side - will will need to take the one in the middle.
Once you get to Conimbriga, the bus will drop you off in the parking lot of the site & museum. The drop off point is where the pick up is as well.
Now prepare yourself for some beautiful mosaics and interesting ruins to walk around! I've added the bus stop and ruins to my Portugal map below.

Thank you so much for this! Just visited there Nov 2017. We had a difficult time finding info on how to get there. Even the locals could not help us out and I stumbled on this blog doing a Google search. Your info is still very accurate, including the departure times. I would like to add a couple things for anyone else seeking out this beautiful site. The cost is 2.50 💶 each way and the returning bus back to Coimbra now departs under the trees on the other side of the parking lot where the tourist buses are parked. Thanks again!

Thank you, this was really helpful! I just went to Conimbriga today (Sept 2018, taking the 12.30 bus from Coimbra and returning at 16.25). The price has gone up to 2.55 each way ;-)

Update from 2023 - still the only directions worth following. The cost is now 2.75. Due to construction the stop is ~3rd stop on the street on the river side. It has a transdev sign. https://maps.app.goo.gl/YWxc8NfeCHGD8XJ5A

Thanks for posting this blog. Only one I could find with clear instructions on how to get there via the bus for a DIY tour.

Addendum: the bus you want will have Condeixa on its display panel (front of bus). Ot worked for us just yesterday. Check schedule daily though; they dropped one of the return trips the night before our trip!

Still the only website that makes sense. Spoke to 2 locals separately who both told us there is no bus to Conimbriga. October 30 2024, took the 9:35 bus from the forth bus stop and the 13:25 bus back. 2.95€ per person 1 way, pay in cash, change is provided by the driver.

November 2024 - such a helpful resource! Despite lots of construction by the water, the bus still picks up at the middle stop as indicated in the photo. The only signage at those stops is for the yellow city buses, not the red and white Transdev buses, but the Transdev bus picked up from there as well. The bus is for “Condeixa” but as this post helpfully says, ends in Conímbriga twice a day. We took the 9:32 bus on a weekday - it was a couple minutes late picking up.
